Workers at Xoco General Hospital have announced the suspension of medical services, including consultations, surgeries, dressings, and treatments, as well as the start of an indefinite strike beginning Tuesday, April 7. They reported that this decision is a response to the non-compliance of a petition that includes labor demands and points out health risks within the hospital. The workers called on the media to a press conference on the same Tuesday, April 7, at 10:00 AM, at the hospital facilities, to provide details of the conflict and their demands.
They Denounce Harassment and Demand Dismissals
Among the main demands, the staff requests the immediate cessation of labor harassment and the dismissal of hospital executives, whom they accuse of creating a violent work environment and violating human and union rights. They also denounced the unilateral closure of work tables by the authorities, which they claim has hindered progress in resolving the conflict.
Alert Over Health Risks in the Hospital
One of the most critical points raised by the workers is the health risk derived from demolition work inside the hospital. According to their complaint, these activities could be dispersing pathogens accumulated over decades, increasing the risk of nosocomial infections and potentially violating current health regulations. In response, they demand the immediate intervention of the Hygiene and Safety Commission, as well as the guarantee of minimum conditions for the safe care of patients.
They Report Retaliation Against Staff
The staff also reported alleged retaliation against workers linked to IMSS-Bienestar, including unjustified dismissals and changes in assignment, which they describe as punitive measures. These actions, they claim, aim to inhibit the reporting of irregularities within the hospital.
Impact on Medical Care
The suspension of services could affect patient care at one of the public reference hospitals in the southern area of Mexico City, at a time when the demand for health services remains high. So far, no alternative measures have been announced to ensure the continuity of medical care.
The strike at Xoco Hospital reflects persistent tensions in the public health system, where labor conditions, infrastructure, and health safety converge as critical factors for hospital operations.
